Master Daniel B. Vigil, Founder
Master Vigil is a high energy, focused and driven person. He is the author of two books, The Taegeuk Poomse Guidebook and Martial Arts Life: how to apply the life lessons of martial arts to daily living (to be published fall of 2008.) He holds a 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo, and a 1st degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. Master Vigil also holds rank in Ju-jitsu and Hapkido, and is currently working toward his Judo black belt. He is an expert at applying the philosophical concepts of Martial Arts to every day life.
Master Vigil is often called on to speak both in and out of the Martial Arts industry. His success coaching and seminars have helped hundreds of people to live more empowered, healthier, happier lives. He is articulate, funny, and has a knack for simplifying complex concepts for his students to understand.
Both in Martial Arts and in life, Master Vigil emphasizes simplicity. He believes that in defense the best techniques are often the most basic, and in life one must avoid over complication.
He has written two home study courses, Capturing the Characteristics of Successful Martial Artists, and Help Your Child Succeed in Martial Arts, Life, and Everything Else. Both are available in an email version on this website.
He married his wife, Jessica, in October of 2004. They have a son, Titus Patrick (often referred to as “The Ty-man”) who was born in July of 2007.
Master Vigil has been studying martial arts for over 20 years. He has been a gold medalist in local, national and international competition more than 80 times. Before his retirement from competition he was a two time Junior Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate national champion, a 10 time state champion, and has won 4 major international open games.
Instructor Tyler B. Osgood, Chief Instructor
Instructor Tyler has an unbridled enthusiasm and passion for life. He is instantly likeable, and has an amazing ability to relate to young people. He is a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and has also studied Hapkido. Tyler has studied martial arts for over 15 years, and was a two time Junior Olympic champion, and a 4 time state champion. He was a competitor in the 2000 Pan Am Games. He has also won gold medals all over Michigan, the U.S, and internationally.
He was also the illustrator for Master Vigil’s book, The Taegeuk Poomse Guidebook.
Instructor Tyler is a resident of Northville, Michigan. He plays guitar and sings, and can be spotted playing all over the metro Detroit area.
Wendy Hinz, School Manager
Wendy is the operational backbone of “Dan Vigil’s Academy of Taekwondo.” She handles everything from overseeing the facilities maintenance, to making sure belts and certificates are ordered for tests, to the sale of equipment. She is practical, detail-oriented, and extremely efficient when it comes to meeting the needs of our members.
Wendy, her husband Mike, and their daughter are some of the original members of “Dan Vigil’s Academy of Taekwondo.” Wendy will have received her 1st degree black belt in the summer of 2009. She is also a veteran member of our instructor training program, and is a fully qualified teacher.
Wendy is bi-lingual, speaking both German and English fluently. She is a Central Michigan University graduate, and a resident of Plymouth, Michigan.
The “Leadership Team”
The Leadership Team is a group of volunteers who wear blue uniforms and help our instructors to teach class. They range in age from 13-64, and have the privilege to take part in our instructor training program. How does it work?
- As their martial art skills progressed, and having demonstrated a tremendous attitude, they were hand selected by Master Vigil to take part in the Leadership training program.
- After a certain amount of classroom instruction on how to teach martial arts they begin a teaching internship, and appear in a blue uniform out on the mat.
- Only after years of classroom study, martial arts study, and internship do they begin to lead classes by themselves and become candidates for full time instructional duties at the Academy.
Most schools are run by a single owner who works a full time job somewhere else, and runs the school in their spare time. Sometimes the owner is a full time martial artist, but the staff of the school is volunteers. Not so with “Dan Vigil’s Academy of Taekwondo!” In addition to Master Vigil there is a full time instructor, a full time office manager, and a part time receptionist. Then there is a team of 10+ volunteers taking part in the instructor training program who support the full time staff.
